Combined Materials "Stone x Flamework"
31.08.2026 - 11.09.2026

Backed by the success of our mixed media workshops, this year we will be introducing, in collaboration with Berlin Flameworks Studio, a workshop exploring stone carving and the glass technique of flameworking. The workshop’s focus is the realisation of individual sculptural projects manipulating and combining both of these wonderful materials.
Participants will learn the fundamentals of flameworking with hand torches, melting and shaping the durable and versatile borosilicate glass to interact, surround, and respond to the stone forms made in the accompanying stone carving experience.
We will be crafting in our beautiful garden, a hidden oasis here in Reinickendorf, Berlin, over the course of two weeks. The workshops will be led by Tobia Silvotti and Leandros Basteas for the stone carving, and Jason Hitchcock for flameworking.
No previous experience is required for the class. We encourage you to bring any designs/pictures to share with us so we can best support you in realising your piece.
Workshop Price: €1500
Schedule
31.08.2026 - 11.09.2026, Monday to Friday, from 10:00 to 18:00
*The stone carving studio will be open on Saturday (Sept. 5th) mid-workshop for individual work; at least one of us will be there to support you as well.
Day 1: Introduction to the School of Sculpture open-air atelier and our flameworking set-up. We will sit down and share our creative ideas for the workshop, as well as setting up the workspaces and picking out our stones.
Days 2-5: You will learn the basic techniques of stone carving, using tools ranging from the traditional hammer and chisel to pneumatic tools and angle grinders with an assortment of different attachments. We will focus initially on the stone elements and prepare our ideas for the flameworking in the second week.
*Jason will also be giving us a demo of flameworking mid-week to give us some inspiration for the developing projects.
Day 6: On Monday of the second week you will have the introduction and deep dive into flameworking.
Day 7-9: This is our time to complete the varied sculpture projects using both the flameworking space and stone carving space as needed.
Day 10: Last touches, clean up of the workspace. On our last day we will display the projects and have a small get-together to celebrate our last evening.
FAQ’s
Accommodation
Is there an inexpensive place to stay around the studio?
and the apartments at Kolo 77 are close by and affordable.
Food & Community
Are there places to eat?
There is a Lidl down the street in case you would like to bring your own food but usually we cook together and share the costs.
Materials & Tools
Are the stone and glass provided?
Yes, you will have your choice of an array of stones at the School of Sculpture. We have many different stones ranging from carrara marble, travertine, green serpentine, different limestones and the list continues… We also have an assortment of glass rods available for flameworking.
Can I bring and use my own tools from home?
Yes, however, you must look after your property. We are not liable for any damages and/or theft.
What clothes should I wear for the workshop?
Some sturdy shoes, and comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting dusty.
Scholarship
I’d like to take the workshop but cannot afford it. You can try applying for a scholarship with the Tutsek foundation to cover the cost. They have a program to support artists working sculpturally specific to the medium of glass.
Continuing After the Workshop
I loved the class and want to continue. What can I do next? Both Berlin Flameworking Studio and the School of Sculpture have a rental program. We can talk about membership and studio rentals/further classes following the workshop.
Transport of Sculptures
How do I transport my sculpture home if I am not based in Berlin?
This is something you should consider from the get-go when picking out your stone in terms of size and weight. We will provide materials and support for building a box to transport the piece if you have a longer journey ahead of you. If you are able to take it yourself in a box (even on a plane) that is the best option. You must organise shipping yourself, although we are there to consult and support you in the process.
